Hi. I'm David Harp...
...the creator of Harmonica Based Mindfulness™.
It may sound funny to you.
But it's no joke.

Because the foundations of "HBM" are solidly rooted in:
Applied Cognitive Science
Evolutionary Psychology
Traditional Buddhist Practice,
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras,
and even the words of The Buddha Himself (as in the
Anapanasmrti Sutra).

More importantly, it works.
Please read on.

I've taught hundreds of thousands of people how to develop a practice of mindfulness meditation.
And I've taught more than a million people to play blues, rock, and folk harmonica. With results within minutes — guaranteed!

Since my graduate school years (studying cognitive-behavioral psychology, with emphasis on thanatology — the psychology of dying or grieving clients), I've been experimenting with different methods for teaching individuals and groups to enhance their mental focus and lower their stress level by short-circuiting unuseful "fight or flight responses," so that they can be happier and more productive, at home or at work. This also happens to be the essential and imperative first step to any mindfulness practice.

My own study and practice of mindfulness began after a moment of realization (January 30th, 1985, 8 pm, if you're interested) during the fifth day of a ten day mindfulness retreat led by Buddhist psychologist
Dr. Jack Kornfield and thanatologist Stephen Levine. Jack, as well as Stephen and his wife Ondrea, have been my main mindfulness teachers, and I am tremendously grateful to them, to this day...

After years of testing and research, I believe that I've developed the most effective way to teach mindfulness for groups of any size, from one to thousands. It may sound a bit funny, but it works, in part because it's fun to do.

Why does Harmonica Based Mindfulness™ work?
Because the same ability that makes playing harmonica possible — paying incredibly close attention to your breathing — is also the most effective form of stress reduction known to humankind. And, as I say, the first and crucial step in developing a mindfulness practice.

Some of my Harmonica Based Mindfulness workshops are specific to the purpose of teaching the attendees to develop an ongoing mindfulness practice, right away. Please

Others of my group presentations begin with mental focus enhancement and stress reduction (and mindfulness), but in some contexts build on those skills to teach
additional content: team-building or creativity or communication skills or change management.
I've created customized presentations for groups as diverse as Kraft Foods, Merck, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, the Red Cross, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, and the FBI.
click here to read more about these. The content of the website it will bring you to — — will have some of the same content as this one, but more aimed at a business audience than this website, aimed (obviously) at those interested in mindfulness, and perhaps a spiritual practice.

As Jerry Greenfield, Co-Founder of Ben & Jerry's, puts it:
"If it's not fun, why do it? David Harp's methods work, because they makes stress reduction, and mindfulness, fun.  So people actually do it.  And keep doing it.  And get the benefits that reducing stress and becoming more mindful can provide in the workplace."
